Logistic companies can use the physical or volumetric weight of packages to calculate the transportation services cost.
Physical weight is the sum of the product and its packaging weight. For example, if you send a mug weighing 500 g, and the product package weight together with the protective material is 150 g, the physical weight is 650 g.
To calculate the volumetric weight, measure the length, width and height of the package in which the product is, and divide the resulting number by a certain indicator. Product packaging measurements are indicated at the product creation stage.
Carriers can calculate the delivery cost by:
- the physical or volumetric weight of the shipment, depending on its dimensions;
- the largest value of shipment weight.

Billing method: If the physical weight exceeds the volumetric weight, billing is based on the physical weight. If the volumetric weight exceeds the physical weight, billing is based on the volumetric weight: L × W × H (cm) ÷ 12 000. The sum of the three sides must not exceed 250 cm, and the longest side must not exceed 150 cm.
Your carrier is ASE-UNI Express TR. The product should be delivered to the Ozon pick-up point.
You’ve packaged the product in a box 60 cm long, 20 cm wide, and 15 cm high. The total physical weight of the shipment is 0.8 kg. ASE-UNI Express TR considers the sum of length, width, and height (L + W + H) of the shipment.
If the shipment dimensions are:
- less than or equal to 90 cm, the cost is calculated by physical weight;
- more than 90 cm, the cost is calculated by volumetric weight by the formula: (L × W × H) cm ÷ 5000.
The sum is 60 + 20 + 15 = 95 cm, so the carrier uses the volumetric weight to calculate the delivery cost. Volumetric weight of the shipment is (60 × 20 × 15) ÷ 5000 = 3,6 kg.

ASE-UNI Express TR rates are: 3 USD per shipment + 0.6 USD for every 100 g of the shipment weight.

GBS Broker UAE rates are: 4.98 USD per shipment + 0.84 USD for every 100 g of the shipment weight.

Avoiding mistakes when packing shipments
If your shipping method includes air freight, take into account the volumetric weight of the shipment. The larger the length, width, and height of the box, the higher its volumetric weight is, even if the product weight is light. Incorrect packaging can increase the delivery cost.
For example, you shouldn’t place a phone case in a computer box: it increases the shipment size and leads to extra expenses. The packaging should protect the product without making the shipment size too large.
